Wouldn’t that undermine the whole point of pop up headlights?
Also.

Common on mx5’s too.

Very common. It is possible to get air through there while retaining the headlight. Although most people don’t actually make them functional and they’d do almost nothing anyway.

This reminds me I saw stick on NACA ducts on a something or other yesterday. It was basically a floor mat cut in triangular naca duct shape. I wasn’t sure what to think.

I wanted to say something about the intake being in the general vicinity of behind the headlight so the extra airflow could help, but pretty much there’s a whole lot of nothing behind the headlight.
BUT...the intake on the FC is pretty much right behind the headlight.
I’d wager that the headlight vent idea started with the FC since an aftermarket cone filter intake would probably put the filter in a spot that would be helped by some air coming through the headlight. Then when the FD came out, RX-7 headlight vents were already a trend, even though the intake was no longer in the right spot for the vents to help much of anything.
That’s just a guess though.

Usually I see on Miatas those “fog lights” or whatever they are below the pop up lights removed and turned into ducts.
